Transition Instructions

Pets can be sensitive to sudden changes in their diets. For this reason, it is extremely important to follow a gradual transition plan to best support your pet's health and product effectiveness. It is recommended to follow at least a 7-day transition plan before exclusively feeding your pet a new food. Cats will often refuse mixed diets, so we recommend adding the new food to a separate bowl from the old food. Start by mixing 75% of your pet's current diet with 25% of the new diet on Day 1 and Day 2. On Day 3 and Day 4, mix 50% of the current diet with 50% of the new diet. On Day 5 and Day 6, mix 25% of the current diet with 75% of the new diet. On Day 7, you can feed your pet the new food exclusively. Ask your Veterinarian about the best way to transition your pet to a new food.

Days 1-2 75% 25%
Days 3-4 50% 50%
Days 5-6 25% 75%

FAQ

Why should I buy veterinary diets from Chewy?

We offer competitive prices and free shipping on orders over $49. Plus, you'll save more if you sign up for automatic refills with Autoship at Checkout. Chewy experts are available 24/7 to answer any questions you have.

How do I order veterinary diets?

  1. Search for the diet your veterinarian recommends and add it to your cart. You can purchase your veterinary diets along with any other items you need.
  2. At Checkout, you'll be asked for your pet's name and veterinary clinic information so we can confirm that the item is authorized by your veterinarian.
  3. Place your order and we'll take care of contacting your veterinarian. If you have a copy of your authorization, you can expedite the process by uploading a scan or photo of it to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.

If your clinic needs more information from you or recommends a different diet, we'll let you know immediately.

I have a copy of the authorization from my veterinarian. Can I send it to you?

Yes. If you have a paper copy of your veterinarian's authorization, you can upload a scan or photo to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.

Can I use a veterinarian's authorization if it was written by a veterinarian out of state? Yes. We accept valid authorizations from anywhere in the United States, Canada, and U.S. territories such as Puerto Rico.

Why do I need a veterinarian's authorization?

Veterinary diets are formulated with the precise ingredients and nutrients needed to address specific medical issues. Because these diets are formulated for medical issues, veterinary authorization is needed to advise you on the best way to give them to your pet and to monitor your pet's health while they are on the diet.

Can someone else (such as a caretaker or family member) place an order for my pet?

Yes, but we'll need them to contact us and provide the full name of the pet's owner after the order is placed. This is so the veterinary clinic can locate your pet's records when we contact them. Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com or call us 24/7 at 1-800-672-4399.

Do authorizations expire?

Yes. Your veterinarian will tell us when your authorization expires and how many refills you have before they'd like you to check back in with them.

Can I set up automatic refills? Yes. Sign up for Autoship at Checkout and select how often you need refills. We'll automatically ship your veterinary diets for as long as your authorization allows. If you run out of refills or your authorization expires, we'll automatically contact your veterinarian for a new authorization.

What if I have more questions? How can I reach the veterinary diets team at Chewy?

Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com, start a chat on Chewy.com, or call us anytime at 1-800-672-4399. We're here for you 24/7.

The flavor changed from the bag we obtained from our vet

By Maggie on Jul 30, 2021

The vet provided us a 3 pound bag to try as a treatment for our cat's constant chewing and pulling out her fur. While she didn't love the food, she ate the recommended amount daily and finished the bag. It seemed to be working on her allergies. The food in the large bag we ordered from Chewy had a different odor that even I noticed, and the cat wouldn't touch it. Something changed.

Too many ingredients, no help for food allergy

By Catfood on Oct 24, 2021

This didn't help my cat with food allergies at all. Zero relief.

    it actually works

By Samantha on Mar 31, 2021

I was hesitant to purchase this food as the first 3/4 ingredients are peas, but my vet suspected a chicken allergy as my cat was biting her nails/fur out, extremely itchy with dandruff. I switched her to this food, and all of that cleared up in a few weeks and she had her kitten energy back. Several people even commented on her energy levels and how much softer and better her fur looked. She loves the taste too! I just wish they had a non-pate wet version to accompany it.

Cats love it and makes fur super soft!

By Mary on Jun 6, 2021

I've only been feeding this to my cats for about a month and their fur is super soft. They immediately ignored their old food once I put this down. This is all my 4 cats want to eat!

Hills prescription d/d dry for cats

By Jackie on Mar 26, 2021

Chewy saves the day with incredibly fast service! My cat got liquid stool from a new bag of her usual food, Royal Canin pea and rabbit. She vomits on non presciption food. My very picky girl loves this food! No vomiting and stools are back to normal!

    Not for my cat

By Julie on May 27, 2021

My cat did not like this food. I slowly introduced this food with the current food, but it didn't go over well.

    He purrs while eating it!

By Zoltan on Aug 24, 2020

I brought Zoltan to our house after my mother died. She had been giving him the d/d canned food, and he was a reluctant eater. (Perhaps it was in sympathy with her while she was dying.) His weight had gone down to just 10 pounds. Once we got him to our home, we switched him to the d/d kibble, and he loves it. Not only does he purr while eating, his weight has gone up 3 pounds, and we're going to have to start limiting him!

    Very expensive

By DentedCans on Aug 28, 2020

Was surprised to see the price on this sensitive food. I could buy six or seven bags of other brands of sensitive food for the price of just one Hill's bag. I split the bowl with half of Hill's and half of another brand of sensitive food and my cat threw it up the first week, so I'm sprinkling it in now hoping for better tollerance.
