Who wrote 'We'll See Again' – and what's the story behind the Vera Lynn vocal?

Who was Dame Vera Lynn, and how quondam was the wartime singer?

Born on 20 March 1917 in East Ham, London, Dame Vera Lynn lived with her female parent Annie, a dressmaker, and her begetter Bertram, a plumber.
